It doesn't take much to do your part in maintaining a clean, healthy Earth. Teaching children how to be responsible citizens of the planet is as important as reminding them to brush their teeth twice a day - both the Earth, and hopefully their teeth, will be with them beyond a lifetime. Don't think you're off the hook because you're an adult, you too have accountability with the progression of our planet. We all know simple steps to keep us on a caring course - here's a refresher course just in case one or two details slipped your mind
Act as if every little thing you do will create a shift towards a positive change. It does. It's the details that accumulate over time to make a big difference. Be mindful of what you need in everyday activities. For example, don't use two paper towels to wipe a minor spill. Minimize waste wherever you can.
Bugs you can squash: litter bugs. Yes, the teeny, tiny piece of paper your gum was packaged in is also worth the effort of walking the extra three feet to the trash bin. Think of it as free exercise.
Can you reuse that bottle of water? The sheet of paper you printed on accident? You most likely can. In fact, there's a good chance you can refill the bottle a couple of times with fresh water before dumping it in the recycle bin. And you could probably turn over that sheet of paper and use it for scrap. If you can swing the purchase, treat yourself to an eco-friendly water bottle. Most coffee shops carry colorful ones at reasonable prices. We personally love the ThinkBaby sport bottles.
Drip, drop. Drip, drop. Glorious water. Love it, cherish it, conserve it. You can save gallons of water a week just cutting your shower down two minutes a day, and turning the water off while you're brushing your teeth (another two minutes saved).
Electricity doesn't grow on trees. Take the time to explain how electricity is generated and why it's important to minimize wasting energy. Make use of sunlight when possible - it's the best lighting there is, appreciate a cool breeze with an open window (don't forget to make sure the windows are kid proof), and unplug the phone if it's already charged.
For goodness sake, recycle!! Lots of things are recyclable - know what they are, and where the recycle bin is!
Get your carbon footprint measured. Know how you are effecting the environment, specifically. It's a fun activity to do with your children as well. Retest it over time and see the difference you are making in a scientific way. http://www.carbonfootprint.com/carbonfootprint.html
Honor the Earth the way you would honor a loving parent. Teach by example. Make the effort. Your grandchildren's grandchildren will thank you.
