It has long been said and believed that fish is just about the healthiest thing you can eat. Its often been reported that salmon carries cancer fighting agents, that fish oil keeps you laughing like you did when you were a kid, and a diet of fish and salad will keep you trim and fit.
All of these things may be true, but in recent years we have also become more aware of the health implications of eating too much fish due to dangers of mercury. Mercury is present in all fish, but grows in levels of toxicity along with the size of the fish. In the most recent studies conducted by the Japanese government large fish such as tuna and swordfish can have up to 1000 times the mercury content than that of a sardine. Wow! For those of us that can't imagine a week without our spicy tuna roll, or tuna fish sandwich, this is something to seriously consider.
The good news is that although mercury can have a permanent effect on your nervous system it can be flushed from the body fairly quickly, halving about every 70 days, so a person could clean their body of it by cutting it out completely in about a year, as reported by the Huffington Post.
We suppose it really comes down to the age old advice, everything in moderation!
