Searching for the Perfect Organic Crib Mattress

There are hundreds of companies out there that offer organic mattresses, so how do you decide which one to purchase? Which is the most organic? Like with any other significant investment, choosing the right organic mattress takes a little bit of research and knowledge before purchasing.

There are a few terms often used to describe the materials used in an organic mattress. 'Certified Organic' refers to anything made from 95% certified organic raw materials. Unfortunately, the other 5% can be any chemical or synthetic fiber. 'Natural' is another one of these terms that can be elusive - so make sure you ask what 'natural' materials means in their manufacturing standards. Also, most mattresses are interspring, which are often covered in a thin cotton layer - make sure that this is completely organic as well.

Fire retardant is often added under the guise of a 'natural' boric acid, however the only natural fire retardant is pure untreated wool. Then they often cover these mattresses with polyethylene (a synthetic plastic) or natural/organic wool quilted to an organic cotton outer. Manufacturers are often unaware that the wool picks up synthetic fibers and/or chemicals during the carding process unless it is carded (processed) in a certified organic mill.

If you are searching for a rubber mattress, they may have a slew of problems due to the deceptive nature of manufacturer claims. Natural rubber is at least 80% natural and there are a lot of manufacturers overseas of the natural rubber. Test results show that Latex Green is a very pure natural rubber. Now there is finally 100% certified organic rubber coming to the U.S. This rubber was tested by Pure-Rest and has passed with zero detectable chemicals. This is the purest rubber available worldwide.

So how do you get a totally pure mattress?

Do not be afraid to ask questions from the manufacturer! Make sure you are not misled by the various, ever-growing number of supposed certifications out there. One fantastic certification to look for is the NAOMI standard. A manufacturer can become certified simply by providing proof of purity as defined by the standards stated on their website, and there is no fee involved. Check it out here: NAOMI Organics
