The Little Seed

tree hugging with style

The moms behind the The Mother Company know what parents hope (want) to see in their children's entertainment. Rather than waiting for someone else to create a productive pastime for kids, these moms put some gumption into their step and did it themselves.

The Mother Company is a multi-facet venture using high-quallity DVD's, iPhone apps, new media, books, and other tools to educate (and entertain!) children ages 3-6. Here's the extra special twist: rather than just focusing on ABC's and 123's, TMC educates children on life skills. "We’re all about the social and emotional lessons and everyday challenges we face as parents trying to raise kind, well-adjusted kids. Who else is going to help us teach our children how to do a freeze dance toothbrushing song? Or how to get out the angries after a bad day? In addition to helping children, we also want to help parents find the social and emotional tools and discussions that will help take some of the stress out of everyday parenting." The Mother Company knows it's inevitable that children living in this day and age will at some point be seated in front of a television, even if it's for the sake of giving mom time to cook for them! That's why they've created products and programming with practical and positive uses. It's not uncommon for parents to find themselves in everyday situations that test their abilities interacting with their children. The Mother Company doesn't shy away from the unavoidable, sometimes inevitable moments of life (unfriendly peers, death, divorce) and helps both parent and child learn to maneuver their way through those situations. Once again, the best part is all these lessons are implemented using fun and enjoyment!

The Mother Company is the brain child of Abbie Schiller (President & Founder) and Samantha Kurtzman-Counter (Executive Vice-President, Production). Both women found themselves in the predicament most mothers find themselves in after giving birth - a pickle. Theses were career driven women who had found much success in their respective careers. What was happening? Soon after their bundles of joy peeked their little heads into the world, Abbie and Samantha discovered happiness was not found at the end of a productive Blackberry call, but rather in a quiet exchange with their child. And now the daunting task of making the world a better place to learn for those little ones. What to do? What to do? Find a team! The Mother Company has an impressive line-up of experts at hand behind the company. Best selling authors, teachers, consultants, mothers - all individuals who understand what it is a mother wants her child to learn.
The Mother Company even has their very own live action hero, Ruby! Ruby is Mary Poppins with a modern day stylish twist and gorgeous red hair. She's intelligent and caring without pushing values on the children. TMC has an effortless way of instilling lessons that is refreshingly calm in contrast with the sometimes annoyingly upbeat cookie-cutter childhood heroes of today. The are video interviews with real kids which give the kids at home someone to relate to, the original songs and tunes are catchy, and the visuals are crisp and colorful. "Ruby's Studio" is an entire series focused entirely on "social and emotional learning". For example, there is an entire show dedicated to Feelings. It is such a simple concept, yet I believe overlooked so often when it comes to dealing with children at such a young age. The Feelings Show encourages children to recognize their own sentiment on things.
There's a pretty good chance you're checking in on what your child is watching, that's why they haven't forgotten about you. There's a "Pop-Up Parenting" section with nuggets of wisdom and advice for you during the videos to help you continue nurturing your child during these crucial formative years.

I'm surprised an idea like this didn't find itself in the public eye sooner. As an active member of society it's crucial to learn intelligent ways to interact and communicate with others. Many children lack social skills, heck, many adults lack social skills! There always a new lesson to learn, a fresh perspective to take, we never stop learning or growing as individuals. I tip my hat to the ladies behind The Mother Company for targeting their energy towards creating a business that has a positive impact on the evolution of little spirits.
